INSIGHT

“The courage to dare”, the famous closing sentence of Amilcare Merlo's speech given on the occasion of the award of an honorary degree, as a key to the story to celebrate the memory of the man who founded the thriving Merlo company.

Challenge.

Celebrating the memory of such an important man in a documentary video was not a simple challenge to face: in addition to showing the great entrepreneur, we also had to highlight the great man behind the company in a more intimate, familiar and emotional context.

Proposition.

Helped by interviews with some of his closest collaborators, we have collected so many anecdotes and information that we could have developed a feature film. With a careful editing work, however, we have tamed this important amount of information, managing to best tell the personality of a brilliant man.

IDEATION

The Courage to Dare

During the speech given at the Politecnico di Torino on the occasion of the award of an honorary degree, Amilcare speaks to young people, encouraging them to dare, because “those who do not dare, will never receive anything.” Simpl. the reactive agency took his advice literally, focusing the protagonist's narrative around the concept of courage. Courage that Amilcare has always demonstrated in all his actions, from the choice of a collaborator to the development of innovative technology. Once the theme has been identified, the time has come to dare: to interview three visionary collaborators with the intention of finding in their stories authentic anecdotes, stories and teachings, able to tell what the founder of the Cuneo company really was.

PRODUCTION

87 years in 20 minutes

Three days of filming: one dedicated to interviews with the protagonists in the beautiful and intimate setting of the Circle of Readers in Turin, the other two dedicated to the creation of company covers, retracing the spaces they lived, breathed and created together with Mr. Merlo.

From a technical point of view, the choice of the DOP fell on the use of XEEN film lenses, the best equipment for recreating intimate and welcoming visual images, capable of transmitting all the emotions, memories and feelings that spring from the interviewees' stories.

DISTRIBUTION

A special screening

The video was published and shared with all Merlo employees on the occasion of the first anniversary of the death of Amilcare Merlo, a way to carry on the memory and the enormous legacy of values that he left to each person who knew him and to his company.
